5:1 scimus enim quoniam si terrestris 1. For we know that if our earthly
domus nostra huius habitationis house of this tabernacle were
dissolvatur quod aedificationem ex Deo dissolved, we have a building of God,
habeamus domum non manufactam aeternam an house not made with hands, eternal
in caelis in the heavens.
5:2 nam et in hoc ingemescimus 2. For in this we groan, earnestly
habitationem nostram quae de caelo est desiring to be clothed upon with our
superindui cupientes house which is from heaven:
5:3 si tamen vestiti non nudi 3. If so be that being clothed we
inveniamur shall not be found naked.
5:4 nam et qui sumus in tabernaculo 4. For we that are in this tabernacle
ingemescimus gravati eo quod nolumus do groan, being burdened: not for that
expoliari sed supervestiri ut we would be unclothed, but clothed
absorbeatur quod mortale est a vita upon, that mortality might be swallowed
up of life.
5:5 qui autem efficit nos in hoc ipsum 5. Now he that hath wrought us for the
Deus qui dedit nobis pignus Spiritus selfsame thing is God, who also hath
given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
5:6 audentes igitur semper et scientes 6. Therefore we are always confident,
quoniam dum sumus in corpore knowing that, whilst we are at home in
peregrinamur a Domino the body, we are absent from the Lord:
5:7 per fidem enim ambulamus et non 7. (For we walk by faith, not by
per speciem sight:)
5:8 audemus autem et bonam voluntatem 8. We are confident, I say, and
habemus magis peregrinari a corpore et willing rather to be absent from the
praesentes esse ad Deum body, and to be present with the Lord.
5:9 et ideo contendimus sive absentes 9. Wherefore we labour, that, whether
sive praesentes placere illi present or absent, we may be accepted
of him.
5:10 omnes enim nos manifestari 10. For we must all appear before the
oportet ante tribunal Christi ut judgment seat of Christ; that every one
referat unusquisque propria corporis may receive the things done in his
prout gessit sive bonum sive malum body, according to that he hath done,
whether it be good or bad.
5:11 scientes ergo timorem Domini 11. Knowing therefore the terror of
hominibus suademus Deo autem manifesti the Lord, we persuade men; but we are
sumus spero autem et in conscientiis made manifest unto God; and I trust
vestris manifestos nos esse also are made manifest in your
consciences.
5:12 non iterum nos commendamus vobis 12. For we commend not ourselves again
sed occasionem damus vobis gloriandi unto you, but give you occasion to
pro nobis ut habeatis ad eos qui in glory on our behalf, that ye may have
facie gloriantur et non in corde somewhat to answer them which glory in
appearance, and not in heart.
5:13 sive enim mente excedimus Deo 13. For whether we be beside
sive sobrii sumus vobis ourselves, it is to God: or whether we
be sober, it is for your cause.
5:14 caritas enim Christi urget nos 14. For the love of Christ
aestimantes hoc quoniam si unus pro constraineth us; because we thus judge,
omnibus mortuus est ergo omnes mortui that if one died for all, then were all
sunt dead:
5:15 et pro omnibus mortuus est ut et 15. And that he died for all, that
qui vivunt iam non sibi vivant sed ei they which live should not henceforth
qui pro ipsis mortuus est et resurrexit live unto themselves, but unto him
which died for them, and rose again.
5:16 itaque nos ex hoc neminem novimus 16. Wherefore henceforth know we no
secundum carnem et si cognovimus man after the flesh: yea, though we
secundum carnem Christum sed nunc iam have known Christ after the flesh, yet
non novimus now henceforth know we him no more.
5:17 si qua ergo in Christo nova 17. Therefore if any man be in Christ,
creatura vetera transierunt ecce facta he is a new creature: old things are
sunt nova passed away; behold, all things are
become new.
5:18 omnia autem ex Deo qui 18. And all things are of God, who
reconciliavit nos sibi per Christum et hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus
dedit nobis ministerium reconciliationis Christ, and hath given to us the
ministry of reconciliation;
5:19 quoniam quidem Deus erat in 19. To wit, that God was in Christ,
Christo mundum reconcilians sibi non reconciling the world unto himself, not
reputans illis delicta ipsorum et imputing their trespasses unto them;
posuit in nobis verbum reconciliationis and hath committed unto us the word of
reconciliation.
5:20 pro Christo ergo legationem 20. Now then we are ambassadors for
fungimur tamquam Deo exhortante per nos Christ, as though God did beseech you
obsecramus pro Christo reconciliamini by us: we pray you in Christ's stead,
Deo be ye reconciled to God.
5:21 eum qui non noverat peccatum pro 21. For he hath made him to be sin for
nobis peccatum fecit ut nos efficeremur us, who knew no sin; that we might be
iustitia Dei in ipso made the righteousness of God in him.
