2:1 statui autem hoc ipse apud me ne 1. But I determined this with myself,
iterum in tristitia venirem ad vos that I would not come again to you in
heaviness.
2:2 si enim ego contristo vos et quis 2. For if I make you sorry, who is he
est qui me laetificet nisi qui then that maketh me glad, but the same
contristatur ex me which is made sorry by me?
2:3 et hoc ipsum scripsi ut non cum 3. And I wrote this same unto you,
venero tristitiam super tristitiam lest, when I came, I should have sorrow
habeam de quibus oportuerat me gaudere from them of whom I ought to rejoice;
confidens in omnibus vobis quia meum having confidence in you all, that my
gaudium omnium vestrum est joy is the joy of you all.
2:4 nam ex multa tribulatione et 4. For out of much affliction and
angustia cordis scripsi vobis per anguish of heart I wrote unto you with
multas lacrimas non ut contristemini many tears; not that ye should be
sed ut sciatis quam caritatem habeo grieved, but that ye might know the
abundantius in vobis love which I have more abundantly unto
you.
2:5 si quis autem contristavit non me 5. But if any have caused grief, he
contristavit sed ex parte ut non onerem hath not grieved me, but in part: that
omnes vos I may not overcharge you all.
2:6 sufficit illi qui eiusmodi est 6. Sufficient to such a man is this
obiurgatio haec quae fit a pluribus punishment, which was inflicted of many.
2:7 ita ut e contra magis donetis et 7. So that contrariwise ye ought
consolemini ne forte abundantiori rather to forgive him, and comfort him,
tristitia absorbeatur qui eiusmodi est lest perhaps such a one should be
swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
2:8 propter quod obsecro vos ut 8. Wherefore I beseech you that ye
confirmetis in illum caritatem would confirm your love toward him.
2:9 ideo enim et scripsi ut cognoscam 9. For to this end also did I write,
experimentum vestrum an in omnibus that I might know the proof of you,
oboedientes sitis whether ye be obedient in all things.
2:10 cui autem aliquid donatis et ego 10. To whom ye forgive any thing, I
nam et ego quod donavi si quid donavi forgive also: for if I forgave any
propter vos in persona Christi thing, to whom I forgave it, for your
sakes forgave I it in the person of
Christ;
2:11 ut non circumveniamur a Satana 11. Lest Satan should get an advantage
non enim ignoramus cogitationes eius of us: for we are not ignorant of his
devices.
2:12 cum venissem autem Troadem 12. Furthermore, when I came to Troas
propter evangelium Christi et ostium to preach Christ's gospel, and a door
mihi apertum esset in Domino was opened unto me of the Lord,
2:13 non habui requiem spiritui meo eo 13. I had no rest in my spirit,
quod non invenerim Titum fratrem meum because I found not Titus my brother:
sed valefaciens eis profectus sum in but taking my leave of them, I went
Macedoniam from thence into Macedonia.
2:14 Deo autem gratias qui semper 14. Now thanks be unto God, which
triumphat nos in Christo Iesu et odorem always causeth us to triumph in Christ,
notitiae suae manifestat per nos in and maketh manifest the savour of his
omni loco knowledge by us in every place.
2:15 quia Christi bonus odor sumus Deo 15. For we are unto God a sweet savour
in his qui salvi fiunt et in his qui of Christ, in them that are saved, and
pereunt in them that perish:
2:16 aliis quidem odor mortis in 16. To the one we are the savour of
mortem aliis autem odor vitae in vitam death unto death; and to the other the
et ad haec quis tam idoneus savour of life unto life. And who is
sufficient for these things?
2:17 non enim sumus sicut plurimi 17. For we are not as many, which
adulterantes verbum Dei sed ex corrupt the word of God: but as of
sinceritate sed sicut ex Deo coram Deo sincerity, but as of God, in the sight
in Christo loquimur of God speak we in Christ.
